22 mm Lug Width vs 45 mm Case Size: How Watch Accessories Are Sized
Share

Last updated: 2026-10-21
A watch band is sized by the gap between the lugs — 18, 20 and 22 mm are lug widths. A bezel ring or bumper case is sized by the case diameter — 45 mm and 51 mm are case sizes. They are two different measurements on the same watch, and mixing them up is the most common reason an accessory arrives and will not fit.
This guide covers how to measure both, the watches that have no lug width at all, and which of the listed accessories matches which model.
1. Two different numbers, two different measurements
| Measurement | What it actually measures | Where you see it | Example from the listings here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lug width | The inside gap between the two lugs — the width of the band where it attaches | Band listings | 22 mm, stated on the three-bead band |
| Case size | The diameter across the watch case | Bezel and case listings | 51 mm (Fenix 8), 45 mm (Instinct 3) |
| Wrist fit | The wrist circumference range the band can cover | Band listings | 155–221 mm on the Milanese mesh band |
A 22 mm band and a 22 mm case share a number and nothing else. If you measure the outside of the watch and get 22 mm, you have measured the case — the band you need is probably not 22 mm.
2. How to measure lug width
- Measure the inside gap between the lugs, in millimetres. A plain ruler is enough: the answer lands on a whole number — 18, 20, 22 or 24 mm on almost every watch.
- Or read the number off the old band. Replacement bands often have the width moulded into the underside near the pin.
- With quick-release pins, measure the old band itself. The pin slides out without tools, so the band's own width at the pin is the measurement you need — the band listed here uses quick-release pins for exactly that reason.
If your measurement falls between two whole numbers, you measured the case or the strap's outer face, not the lug gap. Measure again before ordering.
3. Some watches have no lug width at all
The Fitbit Luxe in this list is the example: its band attaches with a proprietary connector, so there is no 18/20/22 choice to make. The listing is model-specific because the watch is. The same applies to any watch with an integrated or proprietary strap — lug width is simply not a field you get to choose.
This is why “measure your lug width” is the wrong first instruction for some watches, and “find your exact model” is the right one.
4. Check the model and the case size, not the brand
Brand alone does not identify an accessory fit, because the same model name is sold in more than one case size.
- Garmin Fenix 8 — the bezel ring listed here is stated for the 51 mm version, including AMOLED variants. A smaller Fenix 8 case takes a different ring.
- Garmin Instinct 3 — the bumper listed here is stated for the 45 mm version.
- Galaxy Watch 6 — sold in more than one case size, and lug width follows the case size. The band listed is stated as 22 mm, so confirm your watch's lug width rather than assuming every Galaxy Watch 6 takes it.
- Suunto 9 — the silicone strap is listed for the 9 Baro specifically. Compatibility with other Suunto 9 versions is not established by the listing.

What the listings do not state
- The band finish is not guaranteed. Several finishes are pictured (silver, gold, rose gold, two-tone, black, red-accented), and the images do not establish which one is supplied. The listing also states no steel grade and no independent durability testing.
- The silicone strap's wrist range is stated two ways. One image marks 180–220 mm while the section text shows 220 mm as a single figure. Treat the range as approximate and check the fit before ordering.
- The bezel ring is a cover, not a replacement case. It is a decorative and protective ring applied with adhesive tape over the original bezel; it does not replace the watch or its case.
- The bumper is a bumper only. No screen protector is included, and the display stays uncovered so touch still works.
- No strap tool is included with the single bands. The metal band uses quick-release pins, so it does not need one; the silicone strap uses a standard buckle and spring bars.
6. What a new band will not fix
- A lug width mismatch. A 22 mm band does not fit a 20 mm gap, and no adapter makes the pin spacing change.
- A dead tracker or battery. These are straps, bezels and bumpers — the watch is not included in any of them.
- A cracked screen or damaged case. The bumper buffers edges and the bezel ring covers the rim; neither repairs structural damage.
- A proprietary connector. If your watch uses one, only a model-specific band will attach — width is irrelevant.
7. Before you order
- Photograph the old band with a ruler across the lugs. One photo settles lug width, and it also shows whether you have quick-release pins or spring bars.
- Read the exact model and case size from the watch's own settings menu or the back of the case — not from the product name you remember.
- For a bezel or bumper, confirm the case size first. 51 mm and 45 mm are not interchangeable, and the same model name can exist in several sizes.
